French army officer alfred napoleon alexander duffie 1835-1880, nicknamed nattie, served in algiers, senegal, the crimea, and fought against the austrians before coming to the united states to join the union army. His civil war service was with the 2nd new york cavalry adn the 1st rhode island cavalry. His daring exploits in the battle of kelly's ford, and the battle of brandy station turned the dashing frenchman into a civil war hero, and he was made brigadier egneral for his leadership at cedar mountain, 2nd bull run, and kelly's ford. But he soon came into conflict with his superiors, generals benjamni kelley and philip sheridan, and he was relieved of his command on october 20, 1864. A few days later, eh was captured near bunker hill, virginia by the confederates. He was exchanged in april, 1865, serving thereafter in the division of the missouri.
